Job Title: Early Childhood Center Substitute Teacher/Aid

Classification: Part Time/Hourly

Reports To:  Early Childhood Site Coordinator 

General Description:

Substitute Teachers/Aides are under the supervision of the site coordinator and child care teachers and are responsible for assisting them in provision of services and care of children.

Employment and daily staffing subject to enrollment.


  • Complete a background check required by licensing.
  • Have the ability to hear the conversational voice with or without a hearing aid, the ability to speak and be understood under normal circumstances, the ability to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds, and the ability to use arms, hands, legs, and feet with or without corrective devices to accomplish the job, including evacuation of the building during emergencies.
  • Ability to use appropriate and positive discipline.
  • Ability to handle crises, problem solve, make judgments or decisions appropriately and quickly as needed to ensure the well being and safety of clients, staff and facility.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the fundamental principles of the YWCA mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To interact, initiate and encourage the children in the activities during the day.
  2. To help the children control behavior using a positive, appropriate approach; always using a consistent technique.
  3. To treat all children with dignity and respect.
  4. To provide nurturing, but to help the children become independent.
  5. To promote integral learning during meal times, to help the children learn good social skills. 
  6. To observe and maintain the confidentiality of students, parents, staff, and the program.
  7. To assist the teacher in preparing activities for the group and to offer suggestions and information about the children. 
  8. To develop a cooperating and supportive attitude within the room. 
  9. To assist teacher in record keeping by passing on observations regarding the children’s health, behavior and development. 
  10. To participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and other aspects of professional growth. 
  11. To be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the conditions of the classroom on an ongoing basis.
  12. Abide by current YWCA safety regulations as defined by OSHA, Fire Department and other regulatory agencies. 
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Starting Pay: $10.33/hour
